#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————

(Gulzar Saab’s 90th birthday 18th August’2024)

Today 18th August, 2024 is the ninety-first birthday of Poet, Lyricist, Writer, Director and Producer Gulzar Saab. We are celebrating this occasion by covering songs written by him for Hindi Films.

If one looks at the filmography of Gulzar Saab one can see that his journey of writing for films (or songs specifically) started in 1960. There is some confusion about his first movieas a lyricist. Or about the first song written by him as a lyricist for movies.

Here is what our in-house encyclopedia Shri Arunkumar ji has mentioned about this in his post while presenting the song from the movie “Choron Ki Baaraat-1960”.

There were 5 Lyricists for 6 songs of this film. One of them was “Gulzar Deenvi”, who was known as ‘Gulzar’ – the famous poet, director, singer and actor in later days. One of the singers of this film was Mahendra Kapoor. These two are the culprits, who tried to hide and cheat everyone in not admitting honestly how they entered the film line. Now read this –
Gulzar’s first song was not from Bandini – 63, as is always claimed by him, in every interview. He has written lyrics in films Choron ki Baraat-60, Diler Haseena-60 and Shreeman Satyawadi-60. He wrote these songs as Gulzar Deenvi. But he also wrote lyrics in the film Kabuliwala-61 and Prempatra-62 in the name of Gulzar. Even then he claims Bandini-63 as his first film- which is wrong. There is enough proof that Gulzar Deenvi and Gulzar is the same person.

Author Anil Bhargava in his book ‘Hindi Filmon Ke Geetkaar’ has given the same information as mentioned above. However the latest book by Yatindra Mishra ‘Gulzar Saa’b – Hazaar raahen mud ke dekhin’ mentions ‘Shreemaan Satyawaadi-1960’ as the first movie of Gulzar as lyricist. It does not mention the other two movies of ‘1960’ i.e. ‘Choron Ki Baaraat’ & ‘Diler Haseenaa’.

The point here is Gulzar Saab had started his career in films in ‘1960’ and I think his latest movie as a lyricist is ‘Sam Bahadur-2023’.

On the occasion of the birthday of Gulzar Saab today I was looking for a Gulzar Song from a ‘debutant movie’ for this presentation. I came across this song from the movie ‘Sitam-1984’. Though this movie has already made its debut on the blog none of its main songs are posted so far. The song that has been posted is a song in the category of ‘Songs Repeated in Hindi Films’.

“Sitam-1984” was directed by Aruna Vikas for ‘Trinity Films, Bombay’. It was produced by actor Vikram who also wrote the story of this movie. Aruna Vikas the director of this movie wrote the screenplay of this movie and she was also the editor of this movie. As per HFGK Vol-VI this movie was passed by Censor Board on 27.06.1984 (oh! The month and that day of the month is a special date 🙂 ).

The cast of this movie has Vikram, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Sulbha Deshpande, Manju Asrani, Sushma Tendulkar, Pratibha Matkari, V. P. Kale, Pradeep Patkar, Baba Dikshit, Johny Bakshi, Ranga, Vikas Desai, and Keith Stevenson. The cast of this movie also mentions football players Richard Bangera, Nakul, Shivaji Patil, Clerens Lobo, Arthur Martin, Anil Nair, Veenu Prabhu, William Naidu, Siddharth Shetty, Soda Shetty, Anand Adivarekar, Joe D’Souza, Julius Felix, Heath, Gagi, and Jyotsana Karekar as cast of this movie. This movie was the first Hindi movie of Arun Sarnaik (the great Marathi actor).

This movie has four songs written by Gulzar and music for this movie is composed by Jagjit Singh-Chitra Singh.

I have never watched this movie and I am not aware about the story and other details of this movie. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs. I guess that this movie is not available on internet or I could not locate it.

In this post I am presenting a song from this movie ‘Sitam-1984’ which is sung by Ravindra Sathe. This song is a background song as can be concluded from the video of this song. This video is a partial video though. I have noted the lyrics as per the soundtrack-audio version of this song. We can see Smita Patil and Vikram in the picturisation of this song (in the partial video available).

Let us listen to this song and welcome ‘Sitam-1984’ with Gulzar Saab. 🙂

PS – I have now found brief details about this movie on Wikipedia. There the year of this movie is mentioned as ‘1982’. Some sources mentioned it ‘1991’ as well. There seems to be some story about this movie and its release.

As per ‘Wiki’ following is the plot of this movie in brief. I have added the artistes’ names as mentioned there. And, yes, this movie is mentioned as jointly directed by Aruna Raje & Vikas Desai.

Inder (Vikram), a star football player of a team thinks himself guilty of killing another football player Subhash (Naseeruddin Shah) who dies after the impact of football hit on his head which is kicked by Inder. He tries to ask for forgiveness from Meenakshi (Smita Patil), Subhash’s wife. He also gets affectionate with Subhash and Meenakshi’s son. But, Meenakshi insults him and calls him killer and the person who has ruined her life. This has deep impact on Inder who is now bedridden, unstable and mentally ill, in Dr Gindes Hospital. He starts showing signs of recovery when Meenakshi starts meeting him after she realises that Inder’s illness is caused by her. In their regular meetings, Inder starts taking an interest in her, it becomes challenging for Meenakshi to reciprocate his affections. The dilemma before her is that if she spurns him he risks losing all chances of recovery.

That seems to be an interesting plot and it will be great if one gets to watch this movie when we have star cast like Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Vikram, Arun Sarnaik and others.
