“Chhamiya” (1945) was produced and directed by Protima Dasgupta for Protima Dasgupta Films. The movie had Begum Para, Arif, Protima Dasgupta, David, Azoorie, Gulab, Dixit etc.

“Chhamiya” (1945) had 11 songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from the movie to appear in the blog. HFGK is silent about the singer of the song. Listening to the song, it becomes clear that the song is sung by Parul Ghosh.

The movie had two lyricists, viz Pt Indra Cahndra and Kaabil Amritsari. HFGK does not give distribution of songs of the movie between the two. But seeing that this song is a ghazal, it can be assumed that the song is penned by Kabil Amritsari.

Uploader of the song has mentioned Parul Ghosh as the singer and Kabil Amritsari as the lyricist, so I assume that the uploader had this information from the record label (though names of singer and lyricists were not given on the record label in 1945, if my guess is correct).

Gyan Dutt is the music director.

Only audio of the song is available. Story of the song was given by Mr Sadanand Kamath while covering another song of the movie. From the story, I have noted that Begam Para had played the title role of Chhamiya, so my guess is that this song was picturised on Begam Para.

The song is a ghazal. Parul Ghosh may not have been very familiar with the heavy duty Urdu words contained in the lyrics, and it appears that the lyricist was not available to correct her pronunciation of words when the song was being recorded. So twice Parul Ghosh sings “phir aankh kyun mitaa kar” instead of singing “phir aankh kyun milaa kar”.

Notwithstanding that slip, this song appears to be a forgotten gem, that should have become popular instead of ending up as a forgotten song. This should go down as one of the best lyrics of Kaabil Amritsari in Hindi movies.

Song-Vehshat mein apne haathon (Chhamiya)(1945) Singer-Parul Ghosh, Lyrics-Kabil Amritsari, MD-Gyan Dutt

Lyrics

vehshat mein apne haathon
mushqil ko dhoondhte hain
vehshat mein apne haathon
mushqil ko dhoondhte hain
sab hamko dhoodhte hain
ham dil ko dhoondhte hain
sab hamko dhoodhte hain
ham dil ko dhoondhte hain
vehshat

aaye hain tang itne
ham jaane har jagah se
aaye hain tang itne
ham jaane har jagah se
talwaar sar pe rakh kar
talwaar sar pe rakh kar
qaatil ko dhoondhte hain
talwaar sar pe rakh kar
qaatil ko dhoondhte hain
vehshat

mit kar koi mila hai
aisa kabhi hua hai
mit kar koi mila hai
aisa kabhi hua hai ae ae ae ae ae
phir aankh kyun milaakar
phir aankh kyun milaakar
bismil ko dhoondhte hai
phir aankh kyun milaakar
bismil ko dhoondhte hain
vehshat mein apne haathon
mushqil ko dhoodhte hain
vehshat
