I had not heard the name the film “Pathan’ (1962) until I came across the songs on this Blog itself. However, I had heard two songs from this movie sung by Talat Mehmood which were popular on the radio in the 60s. One of Talat Mehmood songs chaand mera baadalon mein kho gaya has already been covered in the Blog. Not much of the information on the film is available on the internet sources other than star cast and songs. IMDB has tagged this film as family drama. The film may have been bombed at the box office and became obscure over a period of time.

PATHAN (1962) was produced under the banner of Madhubala Pvt Ltd and directed by Attaullah Khan (Madhubala’s father). The star cast included Premnath, Mumtaz, Achala Sachdev, Iftikhar, Master Bhagwan, Niranjan Sharma, Siddhu etc. Apart from this film, Madhubala Pvt Ltd had earlier produced ‘Naata’ (1955) and ‘Mehlon Ke Khwaab’ (1960) in which Madhubala was the lead actress. It is a bit of a surprise that in her home production, her name as a lead actress did not figure in ‘Pathan’ (1962). The name of Mumtaz figures in the star cast but I am not sure whether she was the lead actress. In an interview which appeared in the Times of India dated July 13, 2012, Mumtaz had revealed that her first film as a lead actress was ‘Faulad’ (1963) when she was 15 years of age.

I have read somewhere in the internet source which I have not been able to locate now that the film was planned with Premnath and Madhubala in the lead roles. I do not know whether this was the fact or otherwise. Interestingly, there was an unreleased ( or unfinished?) film by the same name which went into floor sometime in early 50s. Recently, four beautiful songs from the unreleased film ‘Pathan’ was uploaded by Mr. Kelly Mistry, the son-in-law of Vinod who composed these songs.

‘Pathan’ (1962) had 7 songs written by five lyricists and sung by six playback singers. HFGK lists 9 music directors (as confirmed by Bharat Upadhyay). Generally, the use of high numbers of playback singers, lyricists and music directors is a pointer to a delayed film for some reasons or other.

I am presenting a song from ‘Pathan’ (1962) which used to be one of the popular songs on the radios in the 60s. The song is ‘aaja ke bulaaten hain tujhe ashq hamaare’ rendered by Talat Mehmood. The song is written by Khawar Zaman and set to music by Jimmy (James Singh?).

Only the audio clip of the song is available. But I guess that the song was picturised on Premnath.

Song-Aa jaa ke bulaate hain tujhe ashq hamaare (Pathan)(1962) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Khawar Zamaan, MD-Jimmy

Lyrics

aaja ke bulaaten hain tujhe ashq hamaare ae
aaja ke bulaate hain
chupchaap nigaahon ne tumhe pyaar kiya thha aa
iss dil ne mohabbat kaa jo ikraar kiya thha aa
kat’te hain mere dil unhin yaadon ke sahaare
yaad aate hain wo din jo tere saath gujaare
aaja ke bulaate hain

honthon se machalne ke liye geet nahin hain
ab haar hai jeewan mein koi jeet nahin hai ae
hum pyaar ki baazi kabhi jeete kabhi haare
yaad aate hain wo din jo tere saath gujaare
aaja ke bulaaten hain

jis nadiya pe kat’ti thhi har ek shaam suhaani ee
jis nadiya pe kat’ti thhi har ek shaam suhaani ee
jis nadiya pe hansti thhi kabhi aake jawaani ee
rotaa hai mera dil usi nadiya ke kinaare ae
yaad aate hain wo din jo tere saath gujaare
aaja ke bulaaten hain
