HATIMTAI (1947) was produced under the banner of Fine Arts Productions and was directed by G R Sethi. The star cast included Kamal Kapoor, Vanmala, Bikram Kapoor, Auzurie, Chandanbala, Hamid (Ajit), Ameerbai Karnataki, Kashinath etc.

Going by the filmography of G R Sethi as a director, it appears that fantasy and stunt films were his forte. I also find that he also wrote lyrics for some of the films directed by him.

The film has 11 songs almost all of which which were difficult to trace. The lyricist/s for all the songs is not known. I could lay my hand on two songs from this film so far in mp3 format. I have already covered one song in the Blog. In addition, one more song rendered by Ameerbai Karnataki is now available on YT.

I am presenting one of the remaining two songs traced by me in mp3 format which I have converted into a video clip and have uploaded the same on YT. The song is ‘shokh nazron ke machalne kaa zamaana aa gaya’ sung by Rajkumari Dubey. As mentioned earlier, the name of the lyricist of the song is not known. The song is set to music by A Kumar (probably Arun Kumar Mukherjee).

The song is written in ghazal format. Note the rhyming pattern (Kaafiya) – ‘zamaana’, ‘gungunaana’, ‘manaana’ ‘fasaana’, and ‘chhupaana’ and the ending words (Radif) ‘aa gaya’ in the second line of all the she’rs. Also the two verses of matla (first) she’r of the ghazal have the same ‘kaafiya’ and ‘radif’. These are some of the important ingredients of a ghazal. Yet, the music director has composed the ghazal more like a ‘nazm’ (geet) by combining the first two sher’rs of the ghazal giving the impression of ‘antara’ of the song. I found it to be interesting as I have not heard of any ghazal whether in films, non-films or in concert recordings rendered in this fashion. There would always in interlude music in between the she’rs.

I liked the ghazal both in poetic and melodic forms. The type of imagery used in ‘baithe baithe meri ummeedon ne li angadaaiyan……’ is a marvellous one .

Overall, this ghazal richly deserves to be greeted with ‘waah waah’.

Song-Shokh nazron ke machalne ka zamaana aa gaya (Hatimtai )(1947) Singer-Rajkumari, MD-A Kumar

Lyrics

shokh nazron ke machalne kaa zamaana aa gaya aa
shokh nazron ke machalne kaa zamaana aa gaya aa
chupke chupke muskuraana aa
chupke chupke muskuraana
gungunaana aa gaya aa
shokh nazron ke machalne
kaa zamaana aa gaya aa
baithhe baithhe meri ummeedon ne li angdaaiyaan aan
baithhe baithhe meri ummeedon ne li angdaaiyaan aan
khud-ba-khud lab par muhabbat kaa fasaana aa gaya aa
shokh nazron ke machalne kaa zamaana aa gaya aa

dil ne mujhse roothhne ki thhaan li hai
kis liye ae
kis liye ae
dil ne mujhse roothhne ki thhaan li hai
kis liye ae
kis liye ae
kyun mujhe roothhe huye dil ka manaana aa gaya aa
shokh nazron ke machalne ka zamaana aa gaya aa

kya kahoon itni pila de zindagi to kya kahoon
kya kahoon itni pila de zindagi to kya kahoon
raaz-e-dil aankhon ke pardon mein chhupaana aa gaya aa
shokh nazron ke machalne kaa zamaana aa gaya aaaa
