Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s -33
—————————————–
MANMAANI (1947) was produced under the banner of Ajit Pictures and it was directed by Sarvottam Badami. The star cast included Jairaj, Ragini, E. Billimoria, Sabita Devi, Nazir Hussain, Amar etc. There were 10 songs in the film but the name of the lyricist is not known. From the gist of the story given in Wikipedia, the film appears to be an interesting one:

Manohar (Jairaj), a wealthy young man and Shashi (Sabita Devi), a young city girl are good friends. They argue about who is a bigger spendthrift, man or woman. Manohar decides to prove that it’s the female and for that he finds a young village girl Tara (Ragini), who he decides to use as an experiment. Tara resides in the village with her father, but agrees to go to the city With Manohar to get photographed.

In the city, she lives with Manohar and he starts grooming her into a perfect lady. She learns the ways and then decides to go to see her father in the village. Manohar has fallen in love with Tara but is unable to tell Shashi, who also loves him. When the villagers taunt Tara for staying alone with a young man in the city, she lets them know that she and Manohar are getting married. She returns to the city with her father only to find Manohar showing slides of the different stages of development in Tara’s grooming to a group of people. Misunderstandings arise only to be sorted out finally when Manohar explains.

Here is the first song from the film to appear on the Blog. The song ‘ishaare ishaare mein duniya bana li’ written in the ghazal format is sung by Hemant Kumar. The name of the lyricist is not known. The song was set to music by Kamal Das Gupta. A feature of this song is that there is virtually no interlude music between mukhda and antara and also from one antara to another antara.

The audio clip of the song available on YT is incomplete. I have made a video from the mp3 clip of the full song and uploaded on YT.

What a lovely ghazal! I wish I could get the name of the lyricist. Hemant Kumar’s rendition of the ghazal is the icing on the cake.
