Naqsh-e-khayaal dil se mitaaya nahin hanooz
Bedard maine tujh ko bhulaaya nahin hanooz
——Josh Malihabadi
Dil se tera khayaal na jaaye to kya karoon
Main kya karoon koi na bataaye to kya karoon
—–Hafeez Jalandhari
Both these ghazals have been written in the same metre expressing almost the same sentiments. I have no idea as to which one of them was written first. But these ghazals have become a source of inspiration for writing lyrics for songs in Hindi films for situations like ‘broken heart’, separation from the beloved etc.
Buta Ram Sharma used the first line of the matla she’r of the ghazal written by Hafeez Jalandhari for the song ‘ dil se tera khayal na jaaye to kya karoon’ in ‘Mitti Ke Khilaune’ (1948). Shakeel Badayuni seems to have got inspiration from both the ghazals mentioned above and wrote tera khayaal dil se bhulaayaa na jaayega in ‘Dillagi’ (1949). Sahir Ludhianvi seems to have gone one step ahead of Buta Ram Sharma and Shakeel Badayuni and wrote tera khayaal dil se mitaaya nahin abhi in ‘Doraaha’ (1952) which can be regarded as a simplified version of the select she’rs of the Ghazal written by Josh Malihabadi.
Recently, I came across the mp3 clip of one more such ‘inspirrd’ ghazal ‘tera khayaal dil se bhulaaya na jaa saka’ from the film HATIMTAI (1947). I could not locate the audio clip of the song on YT.
As per http://www.myswar.com, the ghazal is accredited to A. Kumar as singer and music director, the name I heard for the first time. But in http://www.earthmusic.net, Arun Kumar Mukherjee has been accredited as singer and music director. The singer’s voice does not seem to match with Arun Kumar Mukherjee. In fact, the voice reminds me of Talat Mehmood though there is no quiver in the voice which was unique to Talat Mehmood. I could not get the lyricist’s name. I would request our knowledgeable readers of the Blog to apprised us of the correct information as to the singer, lyricist and the music director.
HATIMTAI (1947) was produced under the banner of Fine Arts Productions and was directed by G R Sethi. Kamal Kapoor and Vanmala were in the lead roles with Bikram Kapoor, Auzurie, Chandanbala, Hamid, Amirbai Karnataki, Kashinath etc in the subsidiary roles.
With this song, ‘Hatimtai’ (1947) makes its debut in the Blog.
