‘Phir Aayee Barsaat’ (1985) is a forgotten film, produced under the banner of Movie Trek. The film was directed by Jaiprakash Vinayak. The cast included Anuradha Patel, Sunil Lahiri, Javed Khan, Saeed Jaffrey, Asma, Ashok Kumar, Paintal, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Neelam, Dinesh Kaushik etc. The film was majorly shot in around Bhopal. It got released on March 08, 1985. For Jaiprakash Vinayak, this was his first feature film as a director. Earlier, he had directed the first video film, ‘Teri Meri Kahaani’ (1981) for B R Chopra.

Jaiprakash Vinayak Karnataki (born in 1945) was one of the seven children of Vinayak Damodar Karnataki, (Master Vinayak) and Susheela Karnataki. His father was the producer-director-actor of Hindi and Marathi films, He was known for some of his major films such as ‘Chhaaya’ (1936), ‘Brahmachari’ (1938), ‘Brandy Ki Bottle’ (1939), ‘Ghar Ki Rani’ (1940), ‘Badi Maa’ (1945), ‘Subhadra’ (1946), Jeevan Yatra (1946) etc. Jaiprakash was the younger brother of Nanda.

Jaiprakash was about 2 years when his father died in Bombay (Mumbai). His paternal aunt, Sarla Kulkarni took the responsibility of looking after him in Nipani. This suited Susheela to keep Jaiprakash away from the influence of the film industry after her bitter experiences. When Jaiprakash was about 10 years, he watched his father for the first time in the film, ‘Brahmachari’ (1938) when it was shown in Nipani on a re-run. The film deeply influenced him to become the director like his father.

After completing Matriculation in Nipani, Jaiprakash shifted to Mumbai with the intention of joining the film industry. But his mother insisted completing graduation before joining the film industry. So, he joined the college. After passing intermediate, he refused to study further, His paternal aunt took him to V Shantaram, her maternal cousin who put him in the Camera Department as apprentice and later as a clapper boy during the filming of ‘Geet Gaaya Patharon Ne’ (1964). On the advice of Sohanlal Kanwar to whom he had met on the sets of ‘Neela Aakaash’ (1965), he started learning Hindi and Urdu which would be useful to improve his chances to direct Hindi films in the future.

Jaiprakash joined producer-director, Vasant Joglekar as Assistant Director while making ‘Ek Kali Muskaayee’ (1968). Due to some exigencies, Vasant Joglekar entrusted shooting of a song, kaun rokega ab pyaar kaa raastaa to Jaiprakash which was to be shot in a temple at Abu. When Vasant Joglekar watched the rushes of the song’s filming, he was so impressed with Jaiprakash that he immediately promoted him as his first Assistant director and made him the Associate Director for his Marathi film, ‘Shevatcha Malsura’ (1965). Jaiprakash got his first opportunity to direct a Marathi film, Lavni Zaali Raagini’ (1976) in which Nanda and Ravindra Mahajani were in the lead role. The film was completed, and the songs were released. However, it remained unreleased.

While accompanying his elder sister, Nanda on her London trip, Jaiprakash came to know about the video filming technique. He studies the books on this subject in the library in London and on his return, he bought a book on video filmmaking technique. Soon he joined B R Films for making short films on some prominent personalities. Jaiprakash was covering cricketers for the short films which he was shooting on the video tape. B R Chopra was impressed with this technique which led to cost cutting and saving of time. He entrusted the first video feature film, ‘Teri Meri Kahaani’ (1981) to Jaiprakash as director with Simi, Vikram and Suresh Oberoi in the main roles. It was made for a video film selling company. Later, the film was released in a limited number of theatres and on TV.

In 1989, Jayprakash got married to Jaishree T. when he was already in his 40s. It was an arranged marriage at the instance of their common spiritual Guru who had discussed this with Jaishree also. Jayprakash was inclined to remain a ‘Brahmachari’ and he had conveyed his decision to his mother, his elder sister, Nanda as well as to his spiritual Guru. However, on his Guru’s insistence, after consulting his mother and Nanda, he agreed to marry Jaishree T. They have one son, Swastik Karnataki who is also associated with films and TV serials in various capacities.

According to Jayshree T, her husband is a raakhi brother to Saira Bano. After the death of Dilip Kumar, Jaiprakash talks to Saira Bano almost every morning to ascertain her well-being. He was also doing the same thing for his sister, Nanda until her death in March 2014.

As mentioned earlier, Jaiprakash directed his first full length Hindi feature film, ‘Phir Aayee Barsaat’ (1985). The film is available for watching on one of the video sharing platforms. The VCD seems to be an edited one and does not contain credit titles. The story ends in the film abruptly. The quality of VCD is average with faded colours. It has no sound in a few scenes. With these limitations, the story of the film is set out below:

Anuradha (Anuradha Patel), daughter of a rich businessman Mr. Razdan (Saeed Jaffrey) loves Sunil (Sunil Lahiri), who has shifted to Bhopal and staying with his friend (Paintal) for his college studies. Both wants to marry but Razdan opposes their relationship because of the financial disparity between two families. Both Anuradha and Sunil decide to elope. But when Anuradha waits for Sunil in a rainy night to elope, but he does not turn up. After waiting for a long period, fully drenched in rains, Anuradha starts walking back on the road in the night in a depressed mood. However, she feels giddy and is about to fall on the road, when a person in the passing jeep notices her. He put her in the jeep and admit her in the hospital. He also informs Anuradha’s father about her hospitalisation who soon reaches the hospital.

Anuradha has recovered from what could be called as mental shock. Razdan thanks the person for his timely help. The person introduces himself as Dilip Bajaj (Javed Khan), son of a big industrialist, Bajaj (Ashok Kumar). After recovery, Anuradha tries hard to know the whereabouts of Sunil. She visits his friend’s house where he used to live. But she finds the house locked. Even her letters to him comes back to her.

In the meantime, Anuradha visits Dilip’s place to personally thank him for rescuing her in a rainy night. Dilip has been undergoing training to become a pilot in a flying club. He invites Anuradha to watch him flying the training plane. With a couple of more meetings, Anuradha gradually gets attracted towards Dilip who also reciprocates. Razdan is now happy with her new relationship as Dilip is from a rich family. He invites Dilip at his house for a lunch which leads to strengthening their relationship. Dilip in turn invites Anuradha for a dinner at a restaurant and proposes her by offering her a ring which she accepts. Razdan is happy with Anuradha’s decision.

Razdan hosts a party in his house to announce the marriage of Anuradha with Dilip. During the party, Dilip goes through the family photo album in which he is shocked to find some photographs of Anuradha with Sunil. When he asks her as to who the person was, Anuradha takes back the album and goes away. Dilip’s shocking expression was for the reason that he was the same person when the jeep he was driving hit Sunil’s car plunging his car in the valley. Dilip has gone for rescuing him but found him dead. He ran away by driving his jeep.

He tells Razdan the truth who consoles him by saying that Anuradha has forgotten him and let this information remain between them only. But Dilip feels uncomfortable. He reveals to Anuradha the truth and she is shocked. She gets annoyed and tells Dilip to leave her at once.

Anuradha returns home and confronts her father for not sharing with her the to information given by Dilip about the accident. She tries to telephone the police station to lodge a complain about the accident. But before she does, she gets a letter from Dilip in which he tells her that he has no right to live, and he is leaving far away from her to a different destination. Anuradha leaves her house at once and reaches the airfield where Dilip used to fly to train as a pilot. She finds Dilip taking off in the training aircraft and commit suicide by hitting his plane on a hill.

The film had six songs written by Sudarshan Faakir (4) and Amin Arun (2). The songs were set to music by Kuldeep Singh (4) and Amin Arun (2). Out of six songs, two songs were in English which were written and composed by Amin Arun. I am presenting the first song from the film, ‘naa mohabbat naa dosti ke liye, waqt ruktaa nahi kisi ke liye’

The background of the picturisation of the song is that Anuradha who has come out of the trauma of her ‘missing’ beloved, Sunil has now developed attraction towards Dilip who had rescued her in a rainy night. Anuradha is in a dilemma. She has gradually started liking Dilip. At the same time, she is unable to forget the ‘missing’ Sunil, hoping for his reappearance. On the other hand, Dilip has also started liking Anuradha, but he is hesitant to reveal his love for her. He has invited Anuradha for a dinner in a restaurant to propose to her. But still, he does not find words to express. In this situation, there is an announcement in the restaurant that the famous ghazal singer Kuldeep Faakir (Dinesh Kaushik) would be singing a ghazal for the diners. After the end of the singing, Dilip suddenly gets up and proposes Anuradha which she accepts.

Sudarshan Faakir has written this philosophical ghazal which is very apt for the situation in the film. Each word of the ghazal depicts the pain in lovers’ mind. Jagjit Singh’s emotional rendering of the ghazal can take the listners in blue mood.
